Abstract

The rapid development of technology, especially the internet and social media, has brought complex consequences for society, especially related to the spread of online gambling. Although governments have attempted to block online gambling content, the emergence of new sites with different names continues to challenge eradication efforts. Online gambling site providers are starting to use celebrities to promote their services, taking advantage of people's large followings on Instagram. Although some Instagram celebrities may only act as brand ambassadors who get a fixed salary, there are also those who become affiliates who get a commission from every new member who joins via a referral code. In a legal context, this research uses a normative-empirical approach, which includes legal analysis as well as case studies regarding legal violations related to online gambling. Although there are legal efforts to deal with these cases, there are challenges in implementing adequate penalties against celebs and other promotional actors. The involvement of celebrities in online gambling promotions is also related to the problem of money laundering, because the origin of the money from gambling is often unclear. Suggestions are given to law enforcement to increase law enforcement against the promotion of online justice, especially against public figures who have great influence, as well as to impose appropriate penalties to prevent similar actions in the future. So, the conclusion is that despite efforts to address the spread of online gambling, challenges continue to emerge, and law enforcement must be more assertive in addressing this phenomenon.
